More Porous Materials: Tantalum and Trabecular Titanium

Tantalum and trabecular titanium implants have established themselves as the best option for total hip arthroplasty, particularly for “liner” procedures. Unlike the titanium commonly used—which was previously the material of choice—tantalum and trabecular titanium have high porosity and characteristics very similar to those of bone, suggesting they may offer greater durability.

Tantalum is a less rigid metal and therefore adapts better to the bone. In addition, its elliptical shape in the acetabulum—rather than spherical—provides it with excellent primary stability.

The tantalum implant is Dr. Llopis’s preferred choice for primary total hip replacements. It is chosen not only for the material but also for its elliptical geometry, which provides excellent primary stability and generally eliminates the need for additional screws.
